In preparation for the upcoming F1 Miami Grand Prix, let's review the air traffic management procedures expected from April 30 - May 4, 2026 surrounding the big race. Overall, we anticipate the most substantial increase of traffic at the following airports:
- Miami International Airport (MIA)
- Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport (OPF)
- Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
- Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE)
- Miami Executive Airport (TMB)
Airport Operations / Flow Programs
Starting with the arrival phase during the preceding week, OPF will be the main field to watch for potential traffic management initiatives such as metering, ground stops, and ground delay programs. Those measures will be continually evaluated each day as we approach the event, and similar impacts could spread to the peripheral fields as circumstances dictate. Given the additional injection of flights over the course of the week, departure delays are also likely at the listed airports and any uncontrolled fields across the region as the event draws to a close. Unsurprisingly, the most congested period is expected to be Sunday evening when the race concludes and the outbound push begins.
Given the increase in flights, there is no guarantee that VFR aircraft attempting to file or pick up their IFR clearance in the air will be successful, and changes of destination will be monitored for those airports close to the event. As always, flight operators and coordinators are highly encouraged to arrange parking ahead of time with the appropriate FBO.
Potential Complicating Factors
If a Presidential Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is issued that weekend in nearby West Palm Beach or Miami, structured routing around the affected airspace could be implemented. The FAA will publish those routes daily on their Current Reroutes webpage (linked below), so please file accordingly. Additionally, the TFR parameters might restrict GA operations at some nearby fields, driving increased traffic to any other available airports in the area. Finally, the leadup to the F1 race overlaps with the PGA Tour Cadillac Championship in Doral, FL, which will bring even more traffic to the area and increase the likelihood of delays at the various airports.
Helpful Links
Users are encouraged to familiarize themselves with any reroutes currently in effect via the FAA's webpage, check for TFRs affecting the airspace, and review any applicable NOTAMs at their airport of choice or for the surrounding area (links to all of the above are included below).
